Sauk County Sheriffs Race

The key issue for Sheriff's candidates is their position on ICE contracts currently in place in Sauk County. Jesberger says on day one, he will end one of the main ICE contracts. Burch says, they are a vital tool and will not change from the way things are. We. Need. Change.

Back to the election for Sauk County Sheriff.

The two candidates are Matt Burch and Ryan Jesberger. Here are the links to their election websites and interviews with each to give you an idea of how they describe themselves:

If you looked at the websites for both candidates you can see that they both have extensive experience in law enforcement. I had an opportunity to hear them and ask questions of them in a small group setting and found them both to be articulate, approachable, and dedicated to law enforcement.

Several qualities set Ryan Jesberger apart.

Ryan Jesberger Position Statement

Since the start of my campaign, I have been clear on my stance on the 287(g) program - On January 4th, 2027, my first day as Sauk County Sheriff, I will end the Sheriff Office's participation in the ICE 287(g) program. Let me explain why...

287(g) agreements:

The problem with the 287(g) agreement is that many of the warrants and actions taken under these agreements do not require an independent judicial review by a judge. Because of this, I do not support the 287(g) agreements that were signed by the Sheriff last year and would end those on Day 1 of my term. Our Deputies should not be trained by ICE to act as ICE agents in our jail (and possibly even on our streets), which is what the various programs of the 287(g) provide…

Matt Burch Position Statement

As a candidate for Sauk County Sheriff and a current member of the department, I always welcome open dialogue regarding public safety and transparency.

Its scope is strictly focused on individuals who are already in custody for violating local or state laws, ensuring accountability and public safety. However, the 287(g) program has multiple aspects that often get blended together and can paint several untrue narratives.

That being said, rather than relying solely on a written statement for a panel, I believe the best way to address these important and complex topics is through direct communication.

I would welcome the opportunity to connect with you. I want to hear your specific concerns and questions firsthand so we can have a meaningful, constructive conversation. I can also share with you how the Sheriff’s…
